Lady Royals Wrap Up Season By Leah Bauder

The Lady Royals of South Royalton concluded an excellent season (11-3-1) on Wednesday the 22nd during the first game of the playoffs. They hosted Hazen (12) as the number six seed, but lost after a tough game, where the Hazen Lady Wildcats scored in the first half.

The Royals started out the season well with seven wins in a row, before finally losing in overtime to Burke Mountain, while missing three of the team’s members and suffering an injury in the second half. They continued on with a win, followed by a tie at Thetford after double overtime. This tie left the Royals 8-1-1, with a week off.

The girls came back a little slow in the game at Whitcomb, although they ended victoriously in a 4-1 win. Their second loss (4-1) came on the following Friday while facing Black River at home, where Shanna Duffy (top scorer for the Royals) netted the only goal for the Royals. They ended regular season play with two more wins.

Royals’ goalkeeper Allie Hull allowed only 14 goals in 15 games, and the Royals’ offense scored more than 25 goals by seven different players. The Royals had a tough time this season with injuries, losing Logan Russell in the fourth game for the remainder of the season, and suffering five other injuries throughout, with three members out for the last games of the season and playoffs.

The Royals’ team is losing seniors Whitney Dumville, Shona Sanford Long, Willow Manning and Julia Collins, but retains plenty of talent in the returning members. Returning are, juniors, Allie Hull, Molly Dumville, Mashia McCullough, Krista Rogers, Shanna Duffy, Logan Russell, Katie Murray, Suzanne Howe and Megan Whitcomb; sophomores, Emma Jozefiak, Allison Turner and Roselie Phillip; and freshmen, Callan George, Alexis Vincelette and Jen Kinnarney. The Lady Royals were coached by Chuck Howe who has coached them now for three years.
