Randolph Girls Beat Harwood But They Lose to Montpelier Number three ranked Montpelier walked into the locker room stunned and a little nervous when the Randolph Lady Ghosts held a 17-12 lead going into halftime. However, in the end, the Ghosts' fourth quarter shooting lapse allowed the Solons to leap ahead and capture a 39-29 victory. Throughout the game, Randolph played a 2-2-1 zone press, disrupting the rhythm of the Montpelier offense and resulting in 19 Solon turnovers, 14 of which came in the first half. By the first quarter, the Ghosts led 11-9 and held onto the edge through the end of the third quarter. After halftime, the Solons were spurred into action as Sarah Lanpher penetrated with a lay-up and Lucia Bragg hit a three to tie it up at 17. But with a three-pointer from freshman Brooke Jacques, Randolph was able to finish out the quarter up by one, 23-22. It was the final period that was Randolph’s downfall. On offense, the Ghosts tried to spread the defense but weren't able to finish their shots. Randolph scored just seven points, no match for Montpelier's 18, closing out the contest with a 10-point difference. Win over Harwood Good ball movement sparked Randolph's offense as they overcame Harwood 43-32 for their long-awaited third win of the season. The Ghosts had no trouble with the Highlanders' press and worked the ball around, penetrating the defense and making the most of their offensive opportunities. As a result, the scoring was evenly divided amongst Randolph's players. Arielle Connolly's strong drives into the paint had her leading all scorers with 14 points. In addition, Shayne Reis had 11, Katie Jickling had 10, and Ashley LaFreniere scored 8, accounting for all the Ghosts’ scoring. Randolph trailed Harwood by two at the half, but outscored their opponents 30-17 in the final 16 minutes. Naomi Koliba led the 2-12 Highlanders with 10 points. Randolph faces Thetford at home on Thursday, Feb 4. |
